A Message from our Keynote Speaker, Chad Dunlap

Hello, and thank you for your interest in UpShift.

I’ll start by introducing myself. I’m Chad Dunlap and I am the owner of Upshift with Chad (UpShift). I’ve had many people ask me “what is UpShift?” UpShift is a coaching business that I started in 2019. There are many avenues that I could take with coaching, however I have chosen to go into public speaking. The main topic that I speak on is suicide awareness; however, my presentation offers so much more than just “awareness”!

My presentation aims to not only show people that life is worth living, it also shows the ways to do just that. I begin by telling the audience a little bit about my life. I walk them through losing my parents in an automobile accident, and the doctors telling my family that I would not live through the night. I then walk them through the challenges of growing up in an abusive household and the challenges that I faced during that time. Lastly, I walk them through receiving a phone call from my best friend telling me that he is going to take his own life and racing to his home to find that he had already passed.

We work from this to going over some staggering statistics based on suicide and mental health. While going through this, I ask the audience questions to keep them involved. If they talk about it, they will take ownership during the presentation and hopefully remember what we talked about. We will go over signs and symptoms and why it is so important to know what those are. We will discuss some of the effects on those left behind and examples of causes and risk factors to become aware of. After this, we move on to ways of managing suicidal thoughts and how to be supportive of others who might be struggling with them. We will then discuss the “understanding your story” part of the PowerPoint where we walk through better ways to talk to ourselves, learn forgiveness for others and more importantly, ourselves. I teach them the importance of moments and how what we focus on truly matters and can control everything about our lives. I end the PowerPoint with an action plan which should be familiar to most: See something, Say something, Do something. I then walk them through how this action plan applies to mental health. The last slide provides the audience with the mental health phone number and text line that is available 24/7.
